Feeling safe enough

For me, safety wasn't ever the goal in my self development & healing, I wanted to feel better, get the bad feelings out (the anxiety and panic) and move on to feeling bloody amazing.

I was drawn to practices that offered a quick fix, a cathartic release and the promise of magically taking away what was painful.

Except it didn't work for me, in fact it in some instances it made things worse. And it wasn't until I understood the nervous system piece that I understood why.

Through working somatically with my body I've learnt the value of small and shuffle steps.

Of allowing my body to heal through not pushing it beyond what feels good. Of beginning with the incremental and letting feeling ok be the foundation for lasting change.

Feeling safe, neutral, just ok. These aren’t necessarily the sexy selling points we look for in self development and healing but without them we stay stuck.

When our nervous system perceives more cues of danger than safety our survival responses activate, we are closed to change and we stay stuck in our story.

When we perceive more cues of safety than danger we’re primed for connection, new stories can emerge and change is possible.

I know safety in the body can be a challenging concept especially if being in your body hasn’t felt safe in the past or doesn’t in this moment. But this is why first we aim for just feeling ok. A small step towards feeling safe instead of a big leap.

Because when we take small steps we can spend more time in the places that feel ok and move towards well-being that feels grounded and sustainable.

From this place we can change and grow.
